More Than a Dozen US Airports Forced Offline by Cyberattacks

Websites of over a dozen US airports were taken down by cyberattacks on October 10th, 2022. Russian-speaking hackers claimed responsibility for the disruption.

Around 14 large US airport websites, including LaGuardia, Los Angeles Atlanta and O’Hare, were targeted by hackers, being made temporarily inaccessible. The majority of these sites have been brought back online.

Officials stated that the attacks did not impact air traffic control, internal airport communication or other key airport operations. They explained the interruption caused an inconvenience for travelers attempting to access flight information.

The cyberattacks caused a denial of public access to public websites that report airport wait times and capacity information.

The hack has been attributed to Killnet, a group of Russian hackers who support the Kremlin, not believed to be direct government actors, according to CNN. The group prefers executing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which flood computer servers with internet traffic in an effort to make them non-functional.

The attack was first reported around 3am ET on Monday, when the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency received word that LaGuardia had been hit, ABC News reported.

A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokesperson informed CNN that the agency is monitoring the issue and assisting affected airports.

A similar attack also targeted Germany’s railway system, causing massive service disruptions in the northern part of the country.
